"When Silk Smitha was found dead in her Kodampakkam home in Chennai in September 1996, I was working for an upcoming TV channel in Thiruvananthapuram. I prompted my colleague Suresh Pattali, a film-buff and libertarian if ever there was one - who is no more - to put together a tribute to Smitha. I wrote the voice-over and he produced it. It was just a piece of quick assemblage, but we were proud to have done it. Not because other channels or newspapers hadn't paid her a tribute. But because Smitha was, even to two media-hardened creatures like us, a rebel and a fighter and we wished to express our solidarity in the hour of her death. A violent death.

Even as the male in us was excited by the raw sensuality Smitha so forcefully projected, we could sense the revolt of the female body she was unleashing in a society that was – and still is – in the grip of a moral double-bind: its inbuilt orthodoxy despising a woman like her; but its suppressed and voluminous lust greedily devouring her. She showed them her body and dared them to see and face it. It was not as if she had scripted the challenge. It was not as if the celluloid had designed a confrontation. It was the way she made her body available to the celluloid that made up the challenge.

Her body was her message. With cold dispassion she placed her body on show knowing fully well the passions it fired in millions of men. She was meeting their secret and shameful need to fantasise in a way that mocked and challenged the hypocrisy that produced it. She displayed with a somnolent arrogance the female body south Indian men had kept buried under the debris of their fantasies and women had secreted away in soulless bedrooms. Her sex-symbol status was both populist and pedestrian, having been manufactured by commercial needs that sought to gratify the widest common denominators. But it harbored a special energy sparked by the erotic force of her body which was not in the handlers' control and which was her magic. It is doubtful if they understood that, or that their camera-creature had a sociological dimension beyond the body they asked her to reveal.

They could have done with any woman with the right body and the right camera appeal. But in the manner Smitha put her body on camera there was an inherent challenge to the sexual taboos that ruled the world she lived in. She was not squeamish about her woman's body and let it come alive on screen in various connotations of nudity just as any male actor would do. That made the difference. Her approach to her body could not have been the bidding of her handlers. Perhaps they would have preferred a bashful vamp to fit the south Indian male's reactionary ego. The choice to be a bold, inviting, female body came from the person she was and the actor she became.

Film critic Sundardas tells the story of her breaking the rules of the game of hierarchy with Shivaji Ganesan. It reflects a feminist stance that, by normal standards, is unexpected from the south Indian filmdom of those days. One day, at a time when Shivaji was the ruling deity of Tamil cinema, Smitha was seated on a chair in a studio when he walked in.

While everyone else stood up and reverentially greeted him she continued to sit where she was, and what's more, with one leg folded across the other thigh – an act of insubordination the south Indian mind does not take kindly to. Shivaji gave her a meaningful look as he went by. Even that didn't fluster her. She stayed put. When someone asked her why she did it, her reply was that she had only placed her leg on her own thigh and not upon Shivaji sir.

The answer only added to the overall dismay. It seems months later she told a fellow actress that she had not got up from her chair because she was wearing a skin-tight mini and thought she should not show herself to Shivaji in that flimsy dress. Which shows, well, that she had a sense of humour.

Like any other actor she was a product of the industry that employed her. Like any other actor what she brought into it was her talent and the urge to act. She had left a poor home and a child marriage in Andhra Pradesh and entered another life of struggle and deprivation in Chennai because, it is said, she wished to be an actor like the legendary Savithri.

She worked as a domestic help and touch-up girl for a starlet and occasionally found work as an 'extra'. Extras were then the slave force of film industry, and sex-work, if demanded, was an obligatory duty for them. Smitha learnt the hard lessons of the south Indian film world in the Dracula's cellars of Kodampakkam. And one day in 1979 Antony Eastman, Malayalam film director, who was looking for a replacement for his heroine Shobha who had committed suicide, offered her a role in his new film .

1978, the previous year, was a landmark for south Indian cinema because that was the year of 'Avalude Ravukal' – 'Her Nights' – a Malayalam run-away hit that became the mother of all south Indian soft-sex films for a long time to come. Directed by I.V. Sashi with Seema, who then was a young 'extra', in the lead role, the film, unlike the lurid image it built up, actually told the moving story of the struggle of a young sex-worker from the slums to find a new life, with a realism that was simple and well-etched. Its eroticism had an innocent and dreamy quality. In its own far-flung way it was, so to say, a poor man's precursor to Hollywood's 'Pretty Woman.'

Eastman's film project dragged on because he was now re-working it to follow the path of 'Her Nights'. The time had become ripe for the arrival of a Silk Smitha. One could say she stepped into the shoes of Seema who had already raced ahead into stardom in the afterglow of her success. Smitha's debut film was the Tamil 'Vandichakram' – 'Cartwheel' – and her short role in a dance scene as the sales-girl in an arrack shop established her credentials as a smart actor with an explosive body presence.

In the film industry, for an unknown talent to get the nod of approval, only seeing is believing, and the hardest part is to reach the point of being seen. Smitha had crossed that barrier and her next film was with Bharathiraja, one of the top Tamil directors of those times and her role of a down-trodden housewife was well received. But it was director Balu Mahendra's 'Moonram Pirai' in 1982, featuring her as the sexually frustrated young wife of an old school teacher, that saw her grand entry as the queen of the kingdom of senses of south Indian cinema. That she shared the credits in that film with superstars Kamalhaasan and Sreedevi enhanced her glamour. This was followed the same year with a Rajnikant film and yet another Kamalhaasan film and Smitha's dance-numbers in both became raging hits.

Silk Smitha had come to stay. In the next three years she acted in over 200 movies and by 1992 she had been featured in over 500. In another four years she was dead.

The touch-up girl had become one of the richest and most sought-after actors in south Indian film industry. To quote film writer K.P. Sunil: "Her popularity with the masses was such that distributors insisted that she be featured in a film before they would pick it up for distribution.

Completed films remained in the cans while the producer and director waited for Silk to give dates for a dance number. And on some occasions, completed films that had been shelved for want of distributors quickly added a couple of Silk dances and went on to become silver jubilee hits. Smitha, in this phase, could name her price and get it too. Charging as much as Rs 50,000 per dance sequence, she did two, sometimes three, dances a day for different producers and earned more than most leading heroines of the time."

Silk Smitha had become a brand-name proclaiming the joy of sexual fantasy for all those who wished to watch her. Her body-magic cut across caste, creed, language and culture. The Tamil, the Malayali, the Kannadiga and the Telugu, the Hindu, the Moslem and the Christian, the brahmin and the dalit, the catholic and the protestant, the shia and the sunni, all horripilating at the thought of a woman baring herself and daring them, flocked to the theatres to peek and peek again.

The industry had chosen her and now she could make her own choices. Yet in one sense she had no choice. Because she couldn't have chosen to be another kind of brand-name if she wished to. She was embedded and trapped in the brand that had made her a super success. To the industry and to the people nothing mattered but her body. She made available to the industry a body that its clients viewed with awe, fascination and lust. The chemistry of her brand-name had bonded her forever to the body-icon on the silver screen. It must have been a great loneliness to feel that you are only the body and nothing else to the millions of people who eyed you with desire on film posters and the screen.

She was a big, luscious woman not only on camera but also in real life, and was so dark that it was said, to appease the white-racism of the south Indian male, she had to be rubbed all over with several coats of pancake to give her a fair look. She had a commanding body that domineered even superstars and, in the words of award-winning film critic C.S. Venkiteswaran, "made her a superior presence even when her role was small".

By the late 1990s her career was in a crisis. Sundardas points to some reasons: Smita's over-packed schedules had made it hard for producers to get her dates suitable to them; her fees were steep; younger actors were making themselves available at easier terms; and a new breed of heroines had arrived who were willing to both play the character and play the body. But what seems to have driven her to suicide – by all accounts it was a suicide - was the loss of almost her entire wealth of more than four crore rupees, which in today's terms would be much more, in three film productions she undertook apparently under the advice of her live-in partner whom she loved and trusted.

Thirty-five is no age to die - especially by your own hand. In the classic Malayalam film 'Kallichellamma' – 'Chellamma the Thief' – there is a heart-wrenching scene in which Chellamma, played by the great actor Sheela, gets ready to end her life by drowning. Crying silently, one by one she takes the steps that lead her to her death. One can only imagine the dark loneliness of the body and of the soul that surrounded Smitha as she took those steps one by one in order to hang herself from a ceiling fan. May her soul find joy and peace.
